It is so difficult to wait; whether you are waiting on a job opening, a health issue to be resolved, a relationship to be restored or perhaps waiting and hoping to meet someone you can spend the rest of your life with. Waiting can be hard. And we all have to wait at times in our lives. As Christians, there is a purpose to waiting and God’s Word makes it very clear that waiting builds strength. So today, in my Making Space Monday blog I want to do a bit of a word study on the word W-A-I-T.
Isaiah 40:31- But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.
Tucked in this passage is the key to waiting; we build strength, we rise above the circumstances, we run and are not weary. Now who doesn’t want to run and not grow weary and to mount up on the wings of eagles? Sometimes I want to mount up with eagles and fly away when things get tough. But Isaiah 40 says you will soar on the air currents and that sounds way more fun! This describes the life of a believer:
Jesus’ words: In this world you will have trouble but I have overcome the world.
Because Jesus has overcome our difficulties, then why do we have to go through trouble on this side of heaven? Because trials, which often involve waiting and the process of waiting, strengthen us.
Now for the word study. The word wait used in this verse is the Hebrew word quavah. The word has both a figurative and literal meaning. The literal meaning of the word is ” to bind together like a cord.” A cord is made by the process of twisting and weaving as in a rope. This gives the rope it’s strength. The figurative definition of the word quavah means waiting in anticipation. In conjunction with the Isaiah passage, those who wait shall renew their strength.
So as we wait upon the Lord, He is building a strong rope out of our lives, weaving many strands together to create a stronger cord. The strength of this rope enables us to meet the difficulties and challenges of life and not grow weary.
Beloved friends, let us not grow weary in waiting but know instead that in the waiting lies our newfound strength in Christ.
